Delta Eliminates Long-Haul 767 Route from Los Angeles
Delta Air Lines Discontinues Los Angeles to Tahiti Flights by June 2025
Delta Air Lines (DL), the Atlanta-based airline, has announced it will cease its service between Los Angeles (LAX) and Papeete (PPT) in French Polynesia after June 7, 2025. This decision comes as part of a broader strategy amid competitive pressures in the airline industry. The route, which had been scheduled to resume on October 7, 2025, has seen all inventory removed, effectively canceling the flights, as reported by aviation expert JonNYC.
Delta Cuts Los Angeles to Tahiti Flight
The seasonal service, which began in December 2022, operated three times weekly using Boeing 767-300ER aircraft. The flight schedule was consistent, with DL119 departing Los Angeles at 11:40 AM and landing in Tahiti at 6:40 PM. Conversely, the return flight, DL118, left Tahiti at 8:40 PM and arrived back in Los Angeles at 7:20 AM the next day.
- Flight Distances:
- The journey from Los Angeles to Tahiti spanned 4,095 miles.
- Average flight durations were approximately:
- 9 hours westbound
- 8 hours and 40 minutes eastbound
Despite operating for three consecutive seasons, Delta has opted to discontinue this route past mid-2025, as flagged by One Mile at a Time (OMAAT).
Future of Delta’s Long-Haul Flights
Following the cancellation of the Los Angeles to Tahiti route, Delta will maintain its presence on the West Coast with year-round flights to major destinations, including:
- Paris (CDG)
- Sydney (SYD)
- Tokyo (HND)
Additionally, seasonal routes will remain to cities such as Auckland (AKL) and Brisbane (BNE). Delta is also set to expand its international offerings, with new flights to Shanghai (PVG) starting June 2025 and Melbourne (MEL) in December 2025.
Competitive Market Pressures Affecting Delta’s Decision
The competitive landscape for travel to Tahiti from the United States continues to be vibrant, even with Delta’s exit. Air France (AF), a SkyTeam partner, maintains flights between Los Angeles and Tahiti as part of its Paris route network. Other airlines, such as Air Tahiti Nui (TN), offer services to both Los Angeles and Seattle, often leveraging partnerships with Alaska Airlines and American Airlines.
- Other Airlines Serving Tahiti:
- United Airlines provides year-round service from San Francisco to Tahiti.
- French Bee, an ultra-low-cost airline, connects San Francisco to Tahiti via Paris.
Delta’s decision to discontinue the route can be attributed to several factors, including its strategic challenges on the West Coast. Unlike United Airlines, which enjoys a fortress hub in San Francisco, Delta lacks a similar advantage in Los Angeles. This limitation restricts Delta’s ability to generate enough feed traffic to sustain the Tahiti route year-round.
Furthermore, the existing service offered by Air France likely influenced Delta’s decision, as Air France provides a superior passenger experience and better connectivity options from Paris, diminishing the need for Delta’s standalone operation.
Despite this route cancellation, Delta customers will still have access to French Polynesia through codeshare agreements with Air France, mitigating the impact of the discontinuation.
