American Airlines Launches New Flight from Philly to Barbados
Barbados Welcomes Inaugural American Airlines Nonstop Flight from Philadelphia
On Saturday, November 9, Barbados celebrated a significant advancement in its tourism sector with the arrival of the inaugural nonstop American Airlines Flight AA549 from Philadelphia (PHL). This momentous flight, which marked a new chapter in connectivity between the U.S. and the Caribbean, landed at Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI) at 1:55 p.m., carrying 118 eager passengers.
The flight was proudly captained by Barbadian Dillon Jackson, alongside First Officer Akiel Alleyne. This historic arrival not only highlighted the airline’s commitment to strengthening ties with Barbados but also showcased the talents of Barbadian pilots, making it a day to remember for both the crew and the passengers.
Celebrating the American Airlines Philadelphia to Barbados Connection
Among the passengers were family members of the flight crew, including Captain Jackson’s mother, Judy Jackson, and First Officer Alleyne’s parents, who were joyfully welcomed upon landing. The event was attended by notable figures, including Minister of Tourism and International Transport, Ian Gooding-Edghill, and other officials from the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI), who gathered to celebrate this important milestone.
The arrival festivities were vibrant and culturally rich, featuring performances by the Haynesville Tuk Band, local dancers, and stilt walkers, reflecting the warm hospitality of the Barbadian people.
Minister Gooding-Edghill expressed gratitude to all parties involved in launching this new route, emphasizing its importance for Barbados tourism. He stated, “Today marks a significant step in strengthening Barbados as a top destination. This new route from Philadelphia reflects American Airlines’ confidence in Barbados’ appeal.”
Boosting Tourism and Connectivity
This new service enhances connectivity from a major U.S. city, providing vital access from a key Trans-Atlantic hub. The Minister further noted the Ministry of Tourism and BTMI’s commitment to collaborating with American Airlines to increase airlift to Barbados, with a goal of exceeding the 633,540 visitors recorded in 2023.
“This route arrives at an ideal time, coinciding with our participation in the World Travel Market in London, where we launched the ‘We Gatherin’ initiative for 2025,” he said. “This service is a crucial gateway for North American visitors and travelers from the U.K. and Europe.”
The “We Gatherin’” initiative aims to attract more airlines and enhance travel experiences, inviting members of the diaspora to reconnect with family on the island.
A Proud Moment for Barbadian Pilots
Krystle Louis, representing American Airlines’ Caribbean Employee Business Resource Group, expressed pride in the fact that the inaugural flight was piloted by two Barbadians. “The Caribbean EBRG is one of 20 groups within American Airlines that fosters a diverse and inclusive environment, celebrating our employees’ heritage,” said Louis.
Captain Dillon Jackson, at just 27 years old, is American Airlines’ second youngest captain. He described piloting this flight as a career milestone, reflecting on his journey that began at the Barbados Light Aeroplane Club. “Bringing a $150 million aircraft back to Barbados for this inaugural flight is a defining moment in my career,” he stated.
First Officer Akiel Alleyne, 31, echoed Jackson’s sentiments, cherishing the moment as a childhood dream realized. “Watching planes at the Light Aeroplane Club inspired me to become an American Airlines pilot, and today, that dream came true,” he shared.

The inaugural American Airlines flight from Philadelphia not only strengthens the tourism landscape in Barbados but paves the way for future growth and connectivity.
