Elderly Couple Faces Distressing Experience on Lufthansa Flight from Chennai to Vancouver

A recent Lufthansa flight from Chennai (MAA) to Vancouver (YVR) turned into a nightmare for an elderly couple, highlighting serious service issues within the airline. Joju Dominic, 69, and his wife Jasmine, 65, invested Rs 3.5 lakh in their round-trip tickets, but their travel experience was marred by multiple disruptions that left them feeling neglected and distressed.

Lufthansa Fined for Inadequate Passenger Care

The troubles began before takeoff on June 12, 2023, when Lufthansa delayed the flight by 90 minutes for cleaning procedures. This prolonged wait left passengers, especially the elderly, feeling uncomfortable as they endured extended periods in the aerobridge.

The situation worsened when water began to drip from the overhead compartment onto their assigned seats. When Mr. Dominic sought assistance, the cabin crew attributed the leak to Chennai’s climate and offered blankets as a solution. Tensions escalated when Mr. Dominic requested further help, and a crew member allegedly threatened him with removal from the aircraft. After enduring these uncomfortable conditions for too long, the airline finally moved the couple to different seats.

Missed Connection Compounds Travel Woes

Things did not improve for the Dominics after they landed in Frankfurt, where they missed their Air Canada (AC) connection to Vancouver due to service disruptions. This missed flight led to additional complications, including a missed ferry booking in Canada, resulting in unexpected expenses for new tickets.

The couple’s return journey on October 3, 2023, was fraught with challenges as their aircraft had to return to Frankfurt due to a fuel leak. Upon landing, they faced dismissive treatment from airport staff, and their requests for accommodation were initially denied. When they were finally provided lodging, they had to walk about two kilometers, which was physically taxing for the elderly couple.

The extended delays also raised health concerns, as they ran low on essential medications. During this time, the airline’s meal service was limited to basic snacks, with food coupons distributed after significant delays.

Lawsuit Filed for Emotional Distress

In response to their ordeal, the Chennai (South) District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission awarded the couple Rs 55,000 in compensation after they filed a lawsuit against Lufthansa Airlines. They initially sought Rs 3.5 lakh for the distress caused during their journey. The Commission ruled in favor of the couple after Lufthansa failed to respond to court notices, awarding Rs 50,000 for mental anguish and Rs 5,000 for legal fees.

Mr. Dominic has since challenged this ruling, appealing for increased compensation, stating that the airline’s service failures caused significant emotional distress and additional financial burdens throughout their travels.

Similar Incidents Raise Concerns About Airline Accountability

This incident is not isolated. In October 2024, the U.S. Department of Transportation imposed a record civil rights violation penalty on Lufthansa Airlines for religious discrimination against Jewish passengers. The airline faced a $4 million fine after denying boarding to 128 Orthodox Jewish travelers based on unfounded allegations.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg emphasized the importance of protecting passengers’ civil rights, stating that the department is prepared to take action against any violations. This incident further underscores the need for accountability within the airline industry.
