Kenya Airways Earns EASA Approval, Partners with Air India

Kenya Airways Partners with Air India and Secures EASA Certification for Enhanced Services

Kenya Airways is making headlines with two key advancements that promise to enhance travel options and maintenance services. The airline has announced a new codeshare agreement with Air India and has received approval from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for maintenance services on European-registered aircraft. These developments are set to improve connectivity between Africa and India while also elevating Kenya Airways’ reputation in aircraft maintenance.

New Codeshare Agreement with Air India

In a significant expansion of their existing partnership, Kenya Airways and Air India have launched a new codeshare agreement, effective January 30, 2025. This agreement offers passengers a streamlined travel experience, allowing them to book a single ticket, enjoy same-terminal connections, and benefit from through-checked baggage and shorter layovers when flying between Africa and India.

Key features of the new codeshare agreement include:

  • Air India Designator Code: Air India will place its ‘AI’ code on Kenya Airways’ twice-daily flights between Nairobi and Mumbai.
  • Expanded Connectivity: Passengers can connect via Mumbai to Air India-operated flights to destinations such as Bangkok, Colombo, Dhaka, Malé, Melbourne, and Singapore.
  • Kenya Airways Designator Code: Kenya Airways will also place its ‘KQ’ code on Air India-operated flights between Delhi and Nairobi, facilitating travel for passengers from across Africa to Delhi via Nairobi.

Both airlines have plans to add more destinations to the codeshare agreement in the future, further enhancing travel options for their customers.

Nipun Aggarwal, Chief Commercial Officer of Air India, stated, “Deepening our partnership with Kenya Airways aligns perfectly with Air India’s strategic vision of expanding our global footprint and strengthening our position in key markets. Our codeshare partnership will provide significant benefits for guests of both airlines and contribute to the overall growth of air travel between India and Africa.”

EASA Part-145 Certification Achieved

In addition to the codeshare agreement, Kenya Airways has achieved a major milestone by receiving EASA Part-145 Certification. This certification allows Kenya Airways to perform heavy and light maintenance, repairs, and overhauls on European-registered aircraft, marking a significant step in expanding the airline’s Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) capabilities.

Highlights of the EASA certification include:

  • Compliance Efforts: The application for Part-145 certification began in 2022 and involved addressing 415 compliance actions, including facility upgrades, staff recruitment, procedural updates, and equipment acquisitions.
  • Maintenance Capabilities: With EASA certification, Kenya Airways can now conduct Base Maintenance on Embraer E190s and Boeing 737-700/800/900 aircraft, and Light Maintenance on Boeing 787-8s, Embraer E190s, and Boeing 737-700/800/900 aircraft.

A spokesperson for Kenya Airways expressed optimism about the new certification, stating, “With this accreditation, we now have the capability to expand our MRO services, create new revenue streams, and strengthen our position as a leader in aircraft maintenance in Africa.”

Conclusion

Kenya Airways’ new codeshare agreement with Air India and the acquisition of EASA certification represent significant steps forward for the airline. These initiatives not only enhance travel options between Africa and India but also position Kenya Airways as a competitive player in the aircraft maintenance sector.
