Virgin Australia and Qatar Airways Forge Groundbreaking Alliance to Enhance Air Travel Connectivity

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has granted a significant authorization for Virgin Australia (VA) and Qatar Airways (QR) to establish a groundbreaking alliance. This strategic partnership is set to revolutionize international air travel connectivity between Australia and the Middle East, introducing 28 new weekly return flight services across major Australian airports.

Under this five-year alliance, the collaboration aims to substantially increase flight frequencies between Doha (DOH) and key Australian cities, including Sydney (SYD), Melbourne (MEL), Brisbane (BNE), and Perth (PER). By leveraging Qatar Airways’ aircraft and crew through a ‘wet lease’ arrangement, Virgin Australia will ensure seamless operational integration, enhancing the travel experience for passengers.

ACCC Commissioner Anna Brakey noted the numerous benefits this alliance brings to the public. "We consider that the conduct is likely to result in public benefits such as adding additional capacity on flights between Australia and the Middle East," she stated. "This will likely place downward price pressure on these routes and also provide customers of both airlines with a greater choice of international flights along with enhanced connectivity and loyalty program benefits."

Enhanced Loyalty Program Benefits for Travelers

The partnership also introduces significant changes to loyalty program interactions. Velocity Frequent Flyer members will continue to enjoy point-earning opportunities across global services, especially with Singapore Airlines (SQ). Importantly, this alliance will maintain Virgin Australia’s existing international airline arrangements with minimal disruption to current travel ecosystems.

The ACCC provided interim authorization on November 29, 2024, allowing immediate marketing and sales preparations for the new routes. Scheduled flights are set to commence in June 2025, marking a new chapter in international air travel between Australia and the Middle East.

Addressing Job Concerns in the Aviation Industry

While the alliance initially raised concerns about potential impacts on Australian aviation jobs, the ACCC conducted a thorough assessment. They concluded that the arrangement was unlikely to materially damage the domestic aviation workforce, as independent operation of Australia-Doha services by Australian airlines is improbable in the near future.
