Lufthansa City Airlines Welcomes First New Airbus A320neo
Lufthansa City Airlines Welcomes New Airbus A320neo: A Milestone in European Aviation
On April 8, 2025, Lufthansa City Airlines celebrated a significant milestone with the delivery of its first brand-new Airbus A320neo. This state-of-the-art aircraft, registered as D-AIJP and named “Ingelheim am Rhein,” was officially handed over at the Airbus final assembly plant located at Hamburg-Finkenwerder Airport (XFW). The addition of this Airbus A320neo enhances the airline’s growing fleet, which already includes four Airbus A319s and three previous-generation A320neos, all previously operated by its parent company, Lufthansa.
Expansion Plans for Lufthansa City Airlines
Launched in June 2024, Lufthansa City Airlines has quickly established itself in the aviation market, focusing on short and medium-haul flights across Europe. The airline initially commenced operations with six aircraft sourced from the Lufthansa mainline fleet. However, with the arrival of the new Airbus A320neo, the airline plans to expand its fleet further, which includes at least eight more A320neo jets and additional A319s over the next year.
This delivery is part of a larger order placed by the Lufthansa Group for several narrowbody jets. Notably, in December 2023, Lufthansa secured an order for 40 Airbus A220-300 aircraft, with an option for 20 more, all designated for Lufthansa City Airlines. Deliveries for these aircraft are set to begin at the end of 2026.
Strengthening Continental Traffic and Competitiveness
According to a company statement, the new Airbus A320neo represents Lufthansa City Airlines’ vital role within the Lufthansa Group, particularly in enhancing continental traffic to and from Munich and Frankfurt hubs starting in 2026. The airline plays a crucial part in bolstering the competitiveness of the short-haul network and consolidating the Lufthansa Group’s market position, while also supporting planned growth on long-haul routes.
Peter Albers, Managing Director of Lufthansa City Airlines, expressed pride in the new aircraft, stating, “Our new aircraft is a further motivation and incentive for the commitment and excellent work of all our employees, who contribute to the success and growth of our airline every day.”
Enhanced Passenger Experience on the New Airbus A320neo
From May 2025 onwards, the newest addition to the Lufthansa City Airlines fleet will accommodate 180 passengers in a single-class configuration. The Airbus A320neo features the innovative Airspace cabin, which includes significantly larger overhead bins, a modern lighting system, and improved seating for enhanced passenger comfort.
With the integration of this new Airbus A320neo, Lufthansa City Airlines’ fleet now consists of eight aircraft, which includes four A319s and four A320neos. By the end of 2025, the airline plans to add five additional brand-new Airbus A320neos and two more A320neos, bringing the total fleet size to 15.
Expanding Route Network Across Europe
In addition to fleet expansion, Lufthansa City Airlines aims to enhance its route network in 2025. The airline plans to introduce seven new destinations for the summer flight schedule, including popular cities like Barcelona, Paris-Charles de Gaulle, Düsseldorf, Rome, Edinburgh, Seville, and Bordeaux.
Currently, the Lufthansa City Airlines network boasts 17 destinations and 18 routes across eight European countries, positioning the airline for further growth and success in the competitive aviation market.
