Passenger Banned for 5 Years Following Attack on United Flight Attendant
CHICAGO- Francisco Severo Torres, a passenger on a flight operated by United Airlines, has admitted guilt for assaulting a flight attendant during a trip from Los Angeles (LAX) to Boston (BOS) in 2023. As a consequence, he has been banned from commercial flights for five years.
This incident on a United Airlines flight raised serious concerns about in-flight safety and led to discussions regarding the mental health evaluation of passengers.

Banned from United Airlines Flights
Approximately four hours into the five-hour flight, flight attendants noticed tampering with an emergency exit. The door handle was altered, and the emergency slide had been disarmed, raising alarms about possible sabotage.
Security footage and crew observations soon pointed to Torres as the culprit, given his proximity to the emergency exit.
When confronted, Torres escalated matters by standing up, making violent threats, and lunging at an attendant with a sharpened metal spoon.
He was able to strike the crew member three times before being subdued by other passengers and airline staff.
Upon landing at Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), Torres was taken into custody. Initially declared unfit for trial, he spent time in a psychiatric facility.
After several months, he was reassessed and deemed competent for trial, despite his defense citing anosognosia, a condition where a person lacks awareness of their mental illness.

Legal Consequences
In May 2025, Torres accepted a plea bargain admitting to interfering with a flight crew using a dangerous weapon.
This charge could have led to life imprisonment, but US District Court Judge Patti B. Saris sentenced him to time served alongside five years of supervised release. The court also imposed a five-year restriction on his ability to fly commercially.
While Torres cannot fly on commercial airlines, a central database tracking individuals banned from flying remains non-existent. Thus, enforcing this ban depends largely on airline cooperation, which presents significant challenges within the aviation sector.

Safety in Airlines and Airports
This occurrence has intensified worries regarding onboard safety and the difficulties in tracking high-risk passengers after incidents. Despite the seriousness of Torres’ actions, the absence of a standardized no-fly list highlights systemic issues.
Airlines and regulatory bodies may advocate for reforms, especially following incidents that reveal vulnerabilities in passenger screening and enforcement of post-incident restrictions.
