Delta Enhances Winter Service with Embraer E175 Jets on Aspen Routes

ATLANTA- Delta Air Lines, through its regional partner SkyWest Airlines, is transitioning to Embraer E175 jets for flights to Aspen (ASE), replacing the older CRJ-700 aircraft. This upgrade aims to boost capacity, comfort, and operational efficiency, catering effectively to the demands of traffic during ski season and at high elevations.

The new aircraft feature larger cargo areas, modern interiors, and advanced avionics, enhancing the overall travel experience for visitors heading to one of North America’s top mountain destinations.

Delta’s Embraer E175 Deployment

Delta Connection flights to Aspen are moving from Bombardier CRJ-700s to the new Embraer E175 jets, which are operated by SkyWest.

The Embraer E175 is particularly well-suited for Aspen’s unique airport constraints, including strict wingspan regulations and challenging approach paths.

With a wingspan of 94 feet, the E175 comfortably meets Aspen’s 95-foot limit, unlike the older CRJ-700. It also shows enhanced performance in adverse mountain weather.

Passengers will enjoy increased comfort thanks to larger overhead bins and spacious interiors that can accommodate full-size carry-ons and ski gear, minimizing the need for gate checking.

This model also features quieter engines and improved avionics, which enhance safety during challenging landing conditions and reduce cancellations due to weather issues.

Improvements in Operations

Aspen’s challenging runway and mountainous surroundings necessitate a high level of training and certification for aircraft and crew.

SkyWest remains the only regional airline with crews specifically qualified for Aspen’s difficult approach and emergency procedures.

With new performance benchmarks, the E175 enhances operational capabilities such as range, loiter time, and the ability to handle low visibility approaches during inclement weather.

Fleet Strategy Overview

This transition signifies a more extensive fleet enhancement for SkyWest. Initially, the Embraer E175 jets will appear on United Express routes to Aspen, with Delta Connection aiming to implement similar upgrades.

Notably, SkyWest has already integrated Delta Connection-specific CRJ-550 aircraft, a redesigned, premium-focused variant seating 50 passengers, into other markets.

Additionally, SkyWest has placed orders for 16 new Embraer E175 jets to be delivered starting in 2027, with options for more, reinforcing a long-term shift toward Embraer aircraft in its regional operations.

A Commitment to Ski Travelers

Delta Air Lines remains committed to ski destinations, with Aspen as a focal point. The introduction of Embraer E175 jets for Delta Connection services from Atlanta and Los Angeles reflects a broader strategy to enhance offerings to popular U.S. ski locations.

This fleet upgrade demonstrates Delta’s commitment to delivering a premium travel experience for those seeking adventure, beautiful scenery, or relaxation in Aspen.
