Aer Lingus Announces Direct Flights from Dublin to Raleigh Durham in 2026

DUBLIN- Aer Lingus (EI) is set to enhance its transatlantic offerings with new nonstop flights from Dublin Airport (DUB) to Raleigh Durham International Airport (RDU), launching on April 13, 2026. This initiative represents the airline’s first foray into long-haul routes for 2026, targeting smaller U.S. markets to improve connectivity.

The airline plans to operate five weekly flights initially, reduced to four during winter, with ticket prices starting at €299 one way. Bookings are already open, promoting tourism, business, and educational travel between Ireland and North Carolina.

Aer Lingus Nonstop Raleigh Durham Flights

From April 13, 2026, Aer Lingus (EI) will offer five weekly flights connecting Dublin Airport (DUB) with Raleigh Durham International Airport (RDU). The schedule includes flights on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays, with a winter reduction to four flights each week.

Flight EI85 is set to depart Dublin at 3:25 PM, landing in Raleigh Durham at 6:55 PM. This journey covers a distance of 3,601 miles in approximately 8 hours and 30 minutes.

The return leg, flight EI84, takes off from Raleigh Durham at 8:25 PM, expected to arrive in Dublin at 8:45 AM the following day after a flight time of 7 hours and 20 minutes.

This new route is serviced by the Airbus A321XLR, accommodating 184 passengers in a configuration of 16 business class and 168 economy seats.

The aircraft is noted for its efficient long-haul performance, tailored for medium-demand routes. Aer Lingus has recently enhanced its business class services to offer better comfort, with rates beginning at €299 for one-way travel, available for booking now.

This expansion supports Aer Lingus’s strategy of servicing 18 U.S. destinations, including major cities like Boston (BOS) and Los Angeles (LAX). It also provides the first direct link from Raleigh Durham to Ireland, catering to the area’s tech and academic sectors.

Route Development at Raleigh Durham

The new route was secured for Raleigh Durham International Airport (RDU) through incentives that have been in place since discussions began in early 2024.

These incentives include reduced fees and marketing assistance, elements that are typically employed to attract airlines to less prominent markets. Such support enables Aer Lingus to initiate services without incurring significant upfront expenses, similar to prior successful expansions.

Passenger interest is buoyed by the Research Triangle’s population of 2.3 million, along with robust business connections in technology, pharmaceuticals, and education.

It is anticipated that the route will attract about 100,000 passengers annually, driven by the Irish community and corporate travels linked to companies like SAS and IBM. There is a distinct demand for this route, as existing flight connections often fall short.

Enhanced Competition

Raleigh Durham Airport (RDU) is now home to five nonstop routes to Europe. Competing airlines include Air France (AF) to Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) with daily Boeing 787 flights, American Airlines (AA) to London Heathrow (LHR) offering three flights weekly, Icelandair to Keflavik (KEF) seasonally four times a week, and Lufthansa to Frankfurt (FRA) daily using Airbus A330 aircraft.

Aer Lingus’s entrance into this market is set to increase capacity by 20%, fostering competition on fares.

As a member of the oneworld joint venture alongside American Airlines, British Airways, Finnair, and Iberia, Aer Lingus emphasizes its ability to grow independently.

This agility allows for niche market targeting, such as North Carolina’s innovation corridor, differentiating it from the larger hubs operated by its partners.

Economic and Connectivity Benefits

This new air route is expected to inject $50 million into North Carolina’s economy every year, driven by tourism and trade, based on airport estimates. It will also create about 200 jobs at RDU and enhance spending by visitors in various towns including Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill.

Travelers will enjoy seamless access to over 100 European cities from Dublin, along with efficient U.S. pre-clearance for quicker returns.

Aer Lingus has reported a Q2 2025 operating profit of €135 million due to growth in its transatlantic services, indicating the route’s potential success.

Furthermore, the A321XLR model is designed to be 30% more fuel-efficient and emit fewer pollutants compared to larger aircraft, helping to meet sustainability objectives. Previous successes in markets like Cleveland (CLE) suggest promising prospects in this new route, with passenger loads exceeding 80% on similar journeys.
