Wizz Air Recognized as Sustainable Airline of the Year for Net Zero Commitment

Wizz Air recently celebrated receiving the prestigious Sustainable Airline of the Year award, underlining its commitment to a “Net Zero by 2050” strategy unveiled earlier this year.

On September 22, 2025, Wizz Air announced this honor at the Airline Economics Sustainability Awards Gala, which recognizes leaders in aviation for their contributions to environmental care, innovation, and societal welfare.

The selection process involved evaluating potential nominees based on their sustainability efforts over the year leading up to August 2025. This assessment was conducted through industry-wide surveys by Estuaire.

Wizz Air shared that the judging panel praised the airline for its “transparent reporting, investment in fuel-efficient aircraft, and operational strategies focused on enhancing environmental performance.”

Dorottya Durucsko, Wizz Air’s Head of Government Affairs and Sustainability, expressed excitement over the award, stating, “We are honored to receive the award of Sustainable Airline of the Year 2025. This accolade reflects our team’s dedication and the strides we are taking towards Net Zero.” She highlighted ongoing investments in advanced aircraft technology and collaborations aimed at increasing sustainable aviation fuel production.

Durucsko emphasized, “Recognition from Airline Economics and Estuaire reinforces our confidence in our mission to enhance the aviation ecosystem. Let’s WIZZ!”

In April 2025, Wizz Air called for urgent changes from both governmental and industry partners to revive stalled Net Zero ambitions.

Coinciding with Earth Day, the airline presented its roadmap to achieve Net Zero by 2050, emphasizing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) as a crucial element of their strategy.

During the financial year 2025, Wizz Air reported an emissions intensity of 52.2 grams of CO2 for every passenger-kilometer traveled.

“Aiming for a 25% reduction in carbon intensity by 2030 and aspiring for 10% of flights powered by SAF within the same timeframe, our long-term strategy focuses on key areas: achieving a 30% reduction in emissions through new aircraft technology, 53% reduction via SAF, and 4% reduction through air traffic management improvements,” explained a spokesperson from Wizz Air.
