Qantas Launches Enrollment for New Safety Academy in Partnership with Griffith and RMIT

Qantas has launched its enrollment for the Qantas Group Safety Academy, marking a significant milestone as Australia’s first dedicated safety education initiative, developed in partnership with Griffith University and RMIT University. The academy is set to begin its inaugural classes in January 2026.

This innovative program merges the educational expertise of Griffith and RMIT with Qantas’ extensive experience in aviation safety, aiming to prepare the upcoming generation of safety professionals.

Graduates can expect to enter high-risk industries such as energy, mining, healthcare, construction, and of course, aviation.

Students have the opportunity to engage in four initial micro-credential courses, which are concise online programs lasting between six to twelve weeks. These courses cover essential subjects, including understanding human behavior in perilous scenarios, analyzing and managing risks, making informed decisions under duress, leading with ethical safety principles, and fostering strong safety cultures.

Participants can choose to enroll in one course or all four, tailoring their learning experience to align with their career aspirations.

In response to feedback from early participants, the Academy plans to introduce eight additional micro-credentials by 2026.

Looking ahead, Qantas intends to expand the program to include postgraduate degrees and advanced research initiatives. This progression will create a comprehensive pathway for professional development and safety education.

The partnership with these prestigious Australian universities began in 2024, aiming to establish the nation’s first safety academy to enhance the skills of professionals across all high-reliability sectors in Australia.

“We’re incredibly proud to be leading this Australian-first initiative in collaboration with Griffith University and RMIT University. The insights we have gained about safety culture, risk management, and human factors have been honed over decades in one of the world’s most safety-critical industries,” expressed Qantas Group CEO Vanessa Hudson.

“These principles apply universally, whether in aviation, healthcare, mining, or any other sector. By founding the Safety Academy, we are dedicated to nurturing the next generation of safety leaders who recognize that fostering a safety culture means empowering individuals to lead, innovate, and watch out for each other,” Hudson concluded.
