Emirates Enhances DXB Experience with Passport-Free Facial Recognition Technology
Emirates has made a significant investment of AED 85 million (approximately $23 million) to install over 200 biometric cameras in Terminal 3 at Dubai International Airport (DXB).
This new technology enables travelers to navigate check-in, immigration, boarding zones, and lounges using facial recognition, completely eliminating the need for passports or boarding passes.
Developed in collaboration with Dubai’s General Directorate of Identity and Foreign Affairs (GDRFAD), the system can recognize registered passengers from nearly three feet away. This allows for seamless processing as travelers walk through checkpoints without needing to present traditional identification.
How Biometric Recognition Works
Passengers, whether visiting or residing in the UAE, can enroll in the biometric system via the Emirates app, self-service kiosks at the airport, or at check-in counters. Once registration is complete, the system remembers each profile, simplifying future travel.
These advanced cameras can identify travelers on the move, reducing the usual delays caused by fumbling for documents. Registered users can access special biometric lanes, bypassing the typical queues encountered during document checks.
Effortless Setup with Lasting Advantages
Passengers need to provide their consent for registration just once within the app. After that, anyone traveling through Dubai International can utilize the biometric lanes, potentially saving a considerable amount of time during busy travel periods.
This initiative is part of Emirates’ ongoing effort to enhance the efficiency of passenger processing at Dubai International Airport as it sees an increasing number of international travelers.
By minimizing the instances in which passengers must present physical documentation, the airline aims to alleviate congestion at key points within Terminal 3 at DXB.
