AirAsia Partners with Bahrain to Boost Aviation Development Efforts

Capital A, the parent organization of the Malaysian low-cost airline group AirAsia, has entered into a Letter of Intent (LOI) with the Kingdom of Bahrain. This collaboration aims to promote Bahrain as a forefront center for aviation, logistics, and engineering within the region.

According to an official statement, this LOI is anticipated to strengthen Bahrain’s position as a crucial connector between Asia, Europe, and other developing regions, facilitating smoother travel, trade, and the movement of talent on a global scale.

As part of this partnership, there are ambitious plans to develop Bahrain into an international aviation hub. This will involve enhancing airline operations, cargo logistics, maintenance, and engineering services, as well as talent development throughout the area. Capital A will leverage its vast experience as the owner of one of the world’s most significant low-cost airline networks.

AirAsia intends to expand its operations significantly in Bahrain, establishing a multi-hub low-cost network. This effort aims to connect the Kingdom with essential destinations across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.

Capital A’s dedication to making Bahrain a central aviation hub aligns with its goal to create a smooth travel experience between emerging markets and established destinations. As part of this vision, AirAsia plans to introduce new flights from Southeast Asia, encompassing Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines, via its regional subsidiaries.

Passengers would benefit from seamless connections through Bahrain International Airport (BAH) to various points in Europe, Africa, and the United States, partnering with the flag carrier, Gulf Air.

As AirAsia evolves from a primarily Asia-focused airline to a multi-hub budget airline model, the new hub in Bahrain is set to play a significant role in expanding its global footprint. This will facilitate greater connectivity for travelers moving between its Asian hubs and emerging markets in Central Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. By 2030, the airline plans to operate over 25 daily flights from Bahrain, transporting more than 20 million passengers annually, thereby making a substantial contribution to the regional economy.

Tourism is to be given a boost

With the Bahraini government backing this initiative, the partnership is expected to enhance tourism and business travel, similar to the successes seen with Etihad, Qatar Airways, and Emirates.

This collaboration will also increase tourism from the Southeast Asian region, taking advantage of Bahrain’s strategic position at the crossroads of East and West. Expanding air routes and logistical capabilities will bolster Bahrain’s tourism infrastructure, attracting more global visitors and positively impacting the national economy.

However, the objectives with Capital A extend beyond just passenger services. The partnership will also work towards amplifying Bahrain’s role in freight logistics. Capital A’s logistics division, Teleport, aims to position Bahrain as a pivotal gateway for e-commerce and cargo connectivity between Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.

A critical aspect of this partnership involves establishing a cutting-edge Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility in Bahrain, spearheaded by Capital A’s Digital Engineering (ADE) subsidiary. This facility will serve both narrow-body and wide-body aircraft, offering advanced training opportunities and innovative technology to educate Bahrain’s local workforce in aviation engineering and aircraft maintenance.

This initiative not only enhances Bahrain’s status as a hub of engineering excellence but also focuses on developing the local workforce, with plans to employ over 1,000 Bahraini nationals in the first year. This development supports Bahrain’s long-term Economic Vision 2030, which seeks to diversify the economy and create high-skilled job opportunities for its growing population.
