Unpacking the $5,000 Mystery: Why Emirates’ Manila First Class Seats Fly Off the Shelves

Filipinos have embraced the concept of “revenge travel” with a flair for the luxurious. Since the term emerged in 2021, it has captured the essence of travelers eager to reclaim lost vacation time during the pandemic.

When Emirates launched its First Class service to Manila in December 2021, demand surged, leading to full bookings every day for three consecutive years.

Emirates operates three flights daily between Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL), but only one features a three-class configuration.

This particular flight has eight exclusive First Class suites on a Boeing 777-300ER, alongside 42 Business Class and 310 Economy seats.

It’s worth noting that these eight suites are consistently sold out.

“Many of our First Class passengers continue onward to Europe, North America, or various Middle Eastern destinations. We see a wide range—from business professionals and vacationers to Overseas Filipinos heading home,” said Saeed Abdulla Miran, Emirates’ Country Manager for the Philippines in an exclusive interview with AeroTime.

“What they all share is a profound appreciation for the privacy, comfort, and personalized services our premium sections offer. It’s this superior experience that keeps them coming back.”

Numbers demonstrate this high demand. From January through September 2025, more than 2,100 First Class passengers flew from Manila, highlighting a growing interest in premium air travel within the Philippine market.

Notably, Emirates is the **only** airline providing First Class options for flights in and out of the Philippines.

Behind the scenes: What makes these suites so special?

Recently, AeroTime visited Manila Airport to tour the Boeing 777-300ER and discover the allure of these sought-after suites.

Before takeoff: The Lounge experience

First Class passengers are invited to the Marhaba Lounge, an Emirates partner facility at the airport. Those holding First Class tickets enjoy exclusive access to a private section of the lounge, enhancing their luxurious journey from the very beginning.

The suites: Privacy meets comfort

Once on board, the eight First Class suites are designed in a 1-2-1 arrangement, allowing every traveler direct aisle access. Decorated in Emirates’ iconic cream and gold colors, the suites create a serene environment.

Each suite boasts three large windows, providing expansive views and generous space. Electronic doors close completely for a perfect balance of privacy and openness.

At cruising altitude, seats transform into fully flat beds, making it easy to rest during long-haul flights.

Amenities that elevate the experience

A range of stellar features accompanies these private suites:

– A 24-inch touchscreen monitor with dual control options
– A personal minibar stocked with beverages
– Sufficient storage for personal items
– Multiple charging ports
– A vanity mirror with lighting for easy touch-ups

Additionally, passengers receive a spacious travel tote containing inflight pajamas, slippers, and separate Bvlgari amenity kits for men and women.

Why are Filipinos choosing luxury?

A round-trip First Class ticket from Manila to Dubai hovers around $5,000 (₱294,000). In stark contrast, the most affordable Economy ticket without checked luggage or meals costs about $291 (₱17,000).

This represents a price difference of more than 17 times the base fare. So, what is motivating more Filipinos to opt for this luxurious experience?

A shift in travel mindset

Traditionally, Filipino travelers have been budget-conscious. A 2023 study by Market research firm TGM Research revealed that 48% of Filipino travelers prioritize cost and affordability when booking trips.

However, a notable transformation is occurring. While a large portion of the Philippines’ population still travels on a budget, an increasing number now places greater value on comfort and overall experiences.

Travel group Trevolution noted a staggering 79% increase in Business Class bookings among Filipinos in 2023, a trend likely to keep growing.

Saeed has witnessed this shift firsthand.

“Flying long distances, travelers are prioritizing comfort and convenience. Post-pandemic, people seem to value not only their destination but also the journey itself,” he explained.

Economic factors driving premium travel

Rising purchasing power significantly influences this trend.

“More Filipinos are treating themselves and their families to premium travel experiences—from private suites to fine dining and seamless connections through Dubai to 145 destinations on our network,” Saeed noted.

This surge in spending isn’t limited to travel. According to a 2025 consumer outlook by BMI Country Risk & Industry Research, Philippine households are expected to exceed pre-COVID purchasing power levels this year, thanks to a recovering labor market and manageable consumer debt.

Average purchasing power for households is projected to rise by 12.5% above 2019 levels, and the upward trend is expected to continue through 2029.

Trevolution anticipates a sustained growth in Business and First Class travel in the Philippines, fueled by heightened consumer spending, economic resilience, and a burgeoning desire among Filipinos for premium flying experiences.

What’s next for premium travelers in Manila?

Travel enthusiasts in the Philippines have exciting developments ahead with Emirates.

Saeed has revealed that the airline is executing a large-scale retrofit program to upgrade cabins on its A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft. This initiative also includes expanding Premium Economy on more routes via Dubai.

Notably, over 30 Boeing 777 aircraft have been fitted with Emirates’ latest First Class offering, termed “The Game Changer.” However, these upgraded planes have yet to arrive in Manila.

A retail experience on the ground

For those who appreciate premium travel, the Emirates World Store at Shangri-La The Fort in Bonifacio Global City offers an engaging retail experience. This location showcases onboard product displays, interactive touchscreens for browsing flights, and even aims to replicate the Emirates lounge atmosphere.

“The Philippines is a vital market for Emirates and a strong candidate for future upgrades,” Saeed commented, hinting that Manila might soon feature the airline’s latest luxury offerings.

For now, it’s clear that Filipino travelers are ready to invest in their journeys, filling those daily First Class suites. This reflects not just a temporary spike in premium air travel but a lasting change in how travelers in the Philippines choose to fly.
