IndiGo Hires Ex-FAA Advisor to Address Operational Challenges
IndiGo is taking significant steps to address recent operational challenges by engaging a seasoned expert for an independent review. This move comes in response to a wave of flight cancellations that disrupted many travelers.
On December 12, 2025, IndiGo announced that Captain John Illson from Chief Aviation Advisors, a US-based consultancy, has been appointed to evaluate the underlying causes of these cancellations. The airline stated, “The objective is to conduct an independent root cause analysis of the recent operational disruption, besides opportunities for improvement.”
The airline decided to bring Captain Illson and his team on board after receiving a recommendation from its Crisis Management Group (CMG), established by the airline’s board. With board approval secured, the review is set to commence shortly, and Captain Illson will provide a detailed report to the board upon completion.
Captain Illson brings with him an impressive background, having spent four decades at the FAA, IACO, and IATA, along with experience at key global airlines. IndiGo praised his extensive expertise in areas such as global aviation strategy, safety leadership, and the development of new aircraft technologies.
On December 11, 2025, IndiGo officially expressed regret over the situation, acknowledging that numerous passengers were stranded for prolonged periods between December 3-5, 2025, and offered compensation to those most affected.
During this challenging period, the airline was compelled to cancel over 3,000 flights due to significant staffing shortages. Key factors contributing to the operational issues were the newly enforced Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) rules implemented by regulatory authorities. These rules require a minimum weekly rest period of 48 hours for pilots and have also reduced the number of permissible night landings from six to two.
To mitigate the impact of these disruptions, Indian aviation authorities directed IndiGo to trim its Winter schedule by 10%, aiming to enhance operational stability.
IndiGo’s CEO, Pieter Elbers, and COO, Isidre Porqueras, recently received a notice from regulators seeking explanations regarding these disruptions, emphasizing the airline’s accountability in addressing these challenges.
