Frontier Airlines Appoints James Dempsey as New CEO in Leadership Shake-Up
Frontier Group Holdings, the parent entity of Frontier Airlines, has implemented unexpected leadership modifications, promoting President James Dempsey to the role of CEO. This shift follows the departure of long-standing leader Barry Biffle.
In a statement released on December 15, 2025, the company announced that Dempsey would assume the position of Interim Chief Executive Officer immediately.
Dempsey has been with Frontier since 2014, initially serving as Chief Financial Officer and currently holding the title of President.
Before his tenure at Frontier, he worked in senior management at Ryanair Holdings PLC and had various management roles at PricewaterhouseCoopers.
“Frontier’s strategic positioning with 13 bases and a competitive cost structure allows us to provide exceptional value to customers throughout the U.S.,” Dempsey remarked. “I am excited to collaborate with our team to shape Frontier’s future.”
The company indicated that Biffle would stay on in an advisory role until December 31, 2025, although the reasons for his exit were not disclosed.
As a low-cost airline, Frontier, like many of its counterparts, has encountered difficulties in maintaining consistent profitability in 2025. They are currently forecasting lower-than-anticipated revenue growth due to reduced demand and the impacts of tariffs, leading to profitability challenges and adjustments in capacity.
In the third quarter of 2025, Frontier Airlines reported $886 million in revenue but also showed a net loss of $77 million, with total liquidity amounting to $691 million.
Reflecting on the airline’s November 2025 financial performance, Biffle stated that “ongoing reductions in competitive capacity are expected to persist into 2026, which will create a more balanced marketplace and ultimately enhance revenue outcomes.”
