Shenzhen Airlines Introduces Direct A330 Flights from Melbourne
Shenzhen Airlines made history by landing at Melbourne Airport (MEL) on December 23, 2025. This inaugural flight marks the airline’s first direct connection to Australia, linking the vibrant Victorian capital with the bustling technology hub in southern China.
Shenzhen Airlines operates this route using its Airbus A330 aircraft three times a week, resulting in over 90,000 additional seats for travelers between Melbourne and China each year. This service opens new pathways, granting access to more than 90 destinations throughout China, Japan, South Korea, Southeast Asia, and the UK.
Recent Additions to Melbourne Airport
The arrival of Shenzhen Airlines is part of a broader expansion initiative at Melbourne Airport, which has welcomed several new or enhanced services from carriers such as Delta, Hong Kong Airlines, and Jetstar within the last 18 days. Additionally, Finnair plans to commence daily services in 2026.
During the inaugural flight celebration, Victorian Minister for Industry and Advanced Manufacturing, Colin Brooks, joined Jim Parashos, Chief of Aviation at Melbourne Airport, along with Chinese Consul-General Fang Xinwen and Shenzhen Airlines Chair Li Shuxing.
Supporting Local Industry
The establishment of this new route is made possible through the Victorian government’s Industry Partnerships Program. This initiative is designed to match government investment dollar for dollar with industry partners to promote destination marketing and enhance economic growth.
Tourism operators stand to gain significantly from this development, as it also fosters new freight opportunities for local exporters and producers targeting key markets in southern China. Victorian travelers will enjoy increased options and seamless connections through Shenzhen, a coastal city renowned for its innovation, commerce, and rich culture.
Strengthening Trade Relations
The introduction of these flights comes at a vital time, as trade relations between Australia and China continue to strengthen. In 2024, China became Australia’s largest trading partner, accounting for 25% of the country’s goods and services trade, which amounted to AU$312 billion (US$208 billion). Notably, Australian exports to China hit AU$196 billion (US$131 billion), representing 30% of the nation’s global exports.
Is this new flight route something you’re excited about? How do you think it will impact travel and trade in the region?
