F-35B Fighter Jet from Britain Forced to Land Emergency at Japanese Airport

LONDON– A British F-35B Lightning II fighter jet made an emergency landing at Kagoshima Airport (KOJ) in southwestern Japan due to a reported malfunction, as confirmed by Kyodo News. This event took place on a Sunday and briefly halted several commercial flights at the airport.

The runway at Kagoshima was shut down for approximately 20 minutes around 1:30 AM local time, but fortunately, no injuries were reported. The emergency landing happened amidst joint exercises involving British forces, Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force, and U.S. forces that commenced on August 4.

Officials at the airport noted that the arrival of the British F-35B led to delays for both departing and arriving flights, affecting multiple services before normal operations resumed.

This aircraft, part of the Royal Navy’s fleet stationed in the Indo-Pacific, was redirected to Kagoshima due to an onboard issue.

This incident marks the second emergency landing involving a British F-35B in under two months. On June 14, another F-35B was diverted to Thiruvananthapuram Airport (TRV) in Kerala, India, following a midair emergency.

That earlier incident was connected to a hydraulic failure, impacting critical systems like landing gear and brakes. The aircraft remained grounded for weeks until repairs were completed by British engineers.

The diversion in June garnered significant public interest as the aircraft stayed in Kerala for an extended period, leading to lively discussions and memes on social media. The F-35B eventually returned to active service after thorough engineering maintenance.

The Spanish Ministry of Defence has confirmed a shift in focus toward European-made platforms, including the Eurofighter and the Future Combat Air System (FCAS).

Initially, Spain had allocated €6.25 billion in its 2023 budget for new fighter aircraft. However, an additional €10.5 billion earmarked for defense is now redirected to European projects, making the acquisition of F-35s impractical.
