KLM Flight Canceled After Passenger Opens Emergency Exit Amid Gun Scare
AMSTERDAM- A KLM (KL) Boeing 777 was set to depart from Atlanta International Airport (ATL) for Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) on the night of November 25, 2025. However, the flight never took off after a passenger alerted authorities about a potential weapon, calling 911 from their seat and opening an emergency exit during taxi.
This prompted an immediate return to the ramp, resulting in the cancellation of the international flight.
All passengers were promptly evacuated and rebooked on later flights. Following a thorough search of the cabin, authorities confirmed that no weapon was found on board.

KLM Cancels Flight Over False Gun Threat
KLM Flight KL622 was taxiing for takeoff when 48-year-old Johannes Van Heertum claimed he saw another passenger with a gun. This alarming statement was heard by other passengers seated nearby.
In response to the reported potential threat, law enforcement received a “person armed” alert. Crew members relayed the escalating situation to air traffic control, and as the aircraft returned towards Ramp 9, the individual rushed to an exit door.
Before nearby passengers could intervene, the exit door was opened, causing the emergency slide to deploy onto one of the airport runways.
Once the aircraft was safely parked, law enforcement boarded to take Van Heertum into custody. After being evaluated by EMTs, he was charged with reckless conduct, second-degree criminal damage to property, and interfering with security measures.
Van Heertum is currently being held at Clayton County Jail without bond. According to radio communications from the cockpit, it was decided that immediate removal of the disruptive passenger was necessary for safety.

Operational Fallout and Safety Protocols
Even if the emergency slide is undamaged, repacking it can cost approximately $12,000. If repairs or replacements are necessary, the costs can increase significantly.
The greater financial burden arises from removing a wide-body aircraft from service, rebooking passengers for a transatlantic flight, arranging accommodations for stranded travelers, and adjusting crew schedules. Collectively, these issues can lead to costs in the six-figure range for the airline.
While passenger safety programs encourage the reporting of suspicious activity, unintended activation of emergency protocols can pose risks to everyone on board.
This incident unfolded while the plane was still in motion, necessitating firm action from both the crew and air traffic control to avert potential hazards. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the event.

Conclusion
KLM quickly rebooked affected passengers following the cancellation and began necessary maintenance checks on the Boeing 777.
Incidents like this often lead airlines to conduct internal reviews of cabin response protocols, addressing disruptions related to mental health, and evaluating procedures for handling reported threats before takeoff.
