AirAsia Introduces Direct Flight from Kota Kinabalu to Ho Chi Minh
AirAsia Expands Network with New Direct Route from Kota Kinabalu to Ho Chi Minh City
AirAsia is making waves in the travel industry with its latest announcement: the launch of a new direct route connecting Kota Kinabalu International Airport (BKI) to Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. This strategic expansion, which took flight on December 3, 2024, aims to enhance regional connectivity and cater to the growing demand for travel between Malaysia and Vietnam.
The inaugural flight left Kota Kinabalu at 11:45 AM local time and arrived in Ho Chi Minh City at 12:55 PM, boasting an impressive passenger load of 96%. This new service marks a significant milestone, being the 16th international route operated by AirAsia Malaysia from Kota Kinabalu.
Enhancing Tourism and Economic Growth
This route launch is part of Malaysia’s broader tourism strategy, which aims to attract 27.3 million international visitors by 2024, coinciding with the preparations for Visit Malaysia Year 2026. Similarly, Vietnam is gearing up to welcome 17-18 million international tourists in 2024, leveraging the peak travel season in the final quarter of the year.
- Key Benefits of the New Route:
- Increased accessibility for travelers between Malaysia and Vietnam.
- Boost to tourism and regional trade.
- Supports economic growth in both nations.
According to a July 2024 report from ASEAN Briefing, Vietnam is also eyeing the lucrative global Halal food market, projected to reach $4.5 trillion by 2030. Collaborating with neighboring countries like Malaysia and Indonesia, which have substantial Muslim populations, is crucial for Vietnam as it works to establish its Halal food certification framework.
Commitment to Regional Connectivity
Paul Carroll, Chief Commercial Officer of AirAsia Aviation Group, emphasized the importance of this new service. “Today’s launch underscores our commitment to strengthening regional connectivity while offering affordable, seamless travel for our guests,” he stated. Carroll further highlighted that this route not only enhances tourism potential for both Sabah and Vietnam but also supports regional trade and economic growth.
As AirAsia continues to expand its network, travelers can look forward to more affordable options and improved access to vibrant destinations.
