DXV Launches UAE’s First Air Taxi Station
UAE Launches First Flying Air Taxi Station: Dubai International Vertiport
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is poised to transform urban transportation with the launch of its first flying air taxi station, the Dubai International Vertiport (DXV). This groundbreaking facility, set to open in 2026, signifies a pivotal moment in the nation’s aviation history, marking the introduction of air taxis in one of the world’s most dynamic cities.
Strategically located near Dubai International Airport (DXB), the DXV is part of an ambitious air taxi project spearheaded by Skyports Infrastructure, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai, and Joby Aviation. This initiative aims to create a comprehensive network of vertiports across the UAE, revolutionizing urban mobility.
DXV: The First of Its Kind in the UAE
The Dubai International Vertiport is the inaugural development in a series of four planned air taxi hubs under the UAE’s innovative air mobility framework. Recently, the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) granted approval for the technical design of DXV, making it the first vertiport to comply with the newly established UAE Vertiport Regulations. This pivotal approval allows Skyports Infrastructure to move forward with the facility’s construction.
The development of DXV includes an extensive evaluation process, ensuring considerations such as physical dimensions, layout, airspace management, and obstacle clearance are thoroughly addressed. Safety remains a top priority, with integrated rescue and firefighting services (RFFS) designed to accommodate both traditional and battery-powered aircraft.
Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, GCAA’s Director-General, emphasized that the design approval for DXV represents a significant leap forward in urban transportation. Duncan Walker, CEO of Skyports, noted that regulatory leadership from the GCAA will facilitate the expansion of air taxi services throughout the UAE.
Key Features of Dubai International Vertiport
The DXV will encompass an area of 3,100 square meters, serving as a dedicated facility for the take-off, landing, and maintenance of flying taxis. Key features of the vertiport include:
- Electric Charging Stations: For efficient aircraft operation.
- Passenger Waiting Areas: Equipped with state-of-the-art security features.
- High Capacity: Designed to handle 42,000 landings and accommodate 170,000 passengers annually.
The initial operations will connect four strategically selected locations: Dubai International Airport (DXB), Downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina, and Palm Jumeirah. With the DXV Vertiport set to launch in early 2026, the UAE is on track to become a pioneer in urban air mobility.
A Vision for the Future
This initiative not only sets new benchmarks for the integration of emerging aviation technologies but also lays the groundwork for future advancements in sustainable transportation. The UAE is committed to maintaining its global reputation as a leader in innovative transportation solutions.
