United Airlines Flight 777: Emergency Landing at Heathrow Airport

CHICAGO- A United Airlines (UA) flight en route to San Francisco (SFO) was compelled to make an emergency landing at London Heathrow Airport (LHR) after smoke was reported in the cabin.

The Boeing 777-200, identified as Flight UA949, initiated an emergency return shortly after departure due to fumes detected in the galley area.

Flight UA949 took off from Heathrow Airport (LHR) around 12:23 PM local time, heading for San Francisco.

Not long after takeoff, the aircraft climbed to roughly 15,000 feet before making the emergency landing near Milton Keynes.

United Airlines stated the flight was diverted back to its departure point due to the presence of fumes, instigating immediate safety protocols.

Upon touchdown, emergency services, including fire and police units, were stationed on the taxiway. The aircraft was escorted to the gate by three fire engines as a precaution.

All 272 passengers and 13 crew members safely disembarked, and no injuries were reported.

Heathrow Airport confirmed that the landing proceeded without incident and that overall airport operations remained unaffected.

The Boeing 777-200 in question reportedly issued a general emergency signal—a precautionary code employed for various in-flight issues, covering both technical failures and medical emergencies.

United Airlines apologized to the affected passengers on its website, stating, “Our maintenance team needs to assess a technical issue with your plane before we take off again.” Additionally, the airline announced it is working on rebooking affected passengers on alternate flights.

Reportedly, this same aircraft had faced another in-flight issue just a week prior while nearing San Francisco, linked to an engine-related emergency.
