Turkish Airlines Launches New Routes to the World’s First Christian Nation
ISTANBUL- Turkish Airlines (TK) has shared exciting news about initiating direct flights to Yerevan, Armenia, and Timisoara, Romania. The airline’s board officially approved these routes on Turkey’s Public Disclosure Platform. While both routes were announced simultaneously, the specifics and timelines are quite different for each location.
The relationship between Turkey and Armenia could impact the Yerevan route, given the two nations’ lack of diplomatic ties and the ongoing border closure since 1993. This new service will be particularly significant, as it aims to fill a gap of 30 years without flights.

Turkish Airlines New Flights
The new routes were recently announced, although details are still sparse. Currently, there is no confirmed start date for the Yerevan flights; the announcement noted that operations are contingent on facilities and market conditions.
In contrast, the Timisoara flights have a clearer timeline, with bookings available from early November 2025. However, specific details regarding flight frequency and aircraft type for both routes have yet to be disclosed.

Return to Armenia
Establishing direct flights between Turkey and Armenia is particularly meaningful given the complex history of the two countries. Regular services have been absent for decades, largely due to the closed border. Currently, travelers must go through other countries like Georgia or Qatar.
Introducing Yerevan into Turkish Airlines’ network adds to its South Caucasus destinations, which already include Tbilisi and Baku. Passengers from Armenia will have easier access to Turkish Airlines’ extensive global network, while Turkish travelers will benefit from direct access to Armenia for the first time in years.
This announcement comes amid recent efforts to improve relations between Turkey and Armenia, including peace mediation and reduced barriers. This airline route symbolizes a potential thaw in relations.

New Flights to Timisoara
Timisoara will become the third city in Romania included in Turkish Airlines’ network, following Bucharest and Cluj-Napoca. With a population of about 300,000, Timisoara is an important economic hub in the Banat region.
The new non-stop service to Istanbul will open doors for Timisoara passengers, offering them enhanced access to various European and Asian destinations. This connection will benefit travelers in business, education, and tourism and will also provide Turkish citizens another Romanian destination beyond the capital and Cluj.
The economic ties between Romania and Turkey have been strengthening, and improved air connectivity plays an essential role in bolstering these relationships. This route will cater to Romanian workers and students who will use Istanbul as a travel hub.
Expanding an Already Massive Network

Turkish Airlines boasts one of the largest route networks globally, currently reaching 287 destinations. This includes 46 domestic routes and 241 international connections across 125 countries, making it a leader in global aviation.
Once the Yerevan flights commence, Armenia will join the list as the 126th country in the Turkish Airlines network. The airline continues to bolster its global presence, enhancing connectivity in regions where it already operates.
Istanbul’s strategic location makes it an ideal hub for travel between Europe, Asia, and Africa. Turkish Airlines actively utilizes this advantage by reaching destinations that many European airlines have ceased to serve.
A broader network creates more connection opportunities. Being part of the Star Alliance enables passengers to accrue and use miles across various airlines, further extending network reach through codeshare agreements.

Bottom Line
These new flights are another step in Turkish Airlines’ ongoing growth journey. The airline has consistently expanded its destination offerings over the past decade. The 2033 Vision indicates that this trend will likely continue.
The addition of Yerevan could reshape regional connectivity while Timisoara enhances Turkish Airlines’ footprint in Romania. This city is now the third destination in the country, supporting economic ties through improved regional access.
With further route announcements on the horizon, Turkish Airlines is gearing up to expand its fleet as part of its ambitious growth plans. Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia present a wealth of expansion opportunities, and the airline is poised to take advantage of them.
