Storm Forces Major Flight Cancellations and Evacuations in Taiwan
Taiwan is currently facing significant travel disruptions as numerous airlines have cancelled their flights in response to the arrival of tropical storm Fung-wong.
On the evening of November 12, 2025, reports from local news agencies indicated that Fung-wong made landfall in Taiwan after being downgraded from a super typhoon.
To safeguard the population, over 8,000 individuals were evacuated, particularly from southern Taiwan, where the storm has already claimed at least 27 lives in the Philippines.
Flights at Kaohsiung International Airport (KHH), located in the southern area of Taiwan, have experienced the most disruptions, while the capital city, Taipei, appears to be largely unaffected by the storm’s trajectory.
Both Eva Air and China Airlines, Taiwan’s leading airlines, proactively informed passengers about potential disruptions to their travel plans.
The Met Office Storms shared on Twitter that, despite the storm’s weakening, localized heavy rainfall is expected in certain areas of southern Taiwan, though widespread impacts are not anticipated.
Despite the diminishing strength of the storm, airlines opted for extensive cancellations. Reports indicate a complete halt to domestic flights.
Airlines such as UNI Air, China Airlines, Cebu Pacific, Thai Airways, Mandarin Air, Tigerair, and Air Macau have all announced cancellations for flights scheduled to and from Kaohsiung Airport today.
Meanwhile, international flights at Taichung International Airport (RMQ) in central Taiwan have reportedly remained unaffected by these weather-related disruptions.
Drone footage showcased extensive flooding in Yilan County as Typhoon Fung-wong approached the island, highlighting the region’s vulnerability.
In a recent update, Thai Airways announced via social media: “Important Travel Update. Due to the impact of Typhoon FUNG-WONG, Thai Airways will cancel flights between Bangkok and Kaohsiung on November 12, 2025, for the safety of our passengers and crew.”
According to TVBS, regions including Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Pingtung, Nantou, Hualien, Taitung, the Hengchun Peninsula, and Penghu have been categorized as warning zones.
Southern Taiwan has already experienced heavy rains, leading to extensive flooding. Local reports indicate that at least 51 people have sustained injuries so far.
