Israeli Tech Entrepreneurs Launch New Airline, TechAir, Amidst Ongoing Conflict

In response to the reduced airline services to Israel due to the ongoing military conflict, a group of innovative Israeli tech entrepreneurs has announced the launch of a new airline, TechAir. This venture aims to provide nonstop flights between Tel Aviv Ben Gurion International Airport (TLV) and New York’s JFK Airport, with plans to commence operations before the end of January 2025. As travel options dwindle, TechAir seeks to fill the gap and meet the demand for business travel between Israel and the United States.

TechAir: Filling the Void in Air Travel

The initiative for TechAir emerged from the Israeli High-Tech Headquarters, a forum uniting founders and executives of technology companies who frequently travel to the US for business. Currently, El Al is the only airline offering nonstop flights between Tel Aviv and the US, operating a limited number of flights which has resulted in high fares and low availability.

  • Limited Flight Options: As of early 2025, El Al has been the sole provider of nonstop flights, operating 389 flights to six US destinations, including New York-JFK and Newark (EWR).
  • High Fare Concerns: Searches on El Al’s website revealed no economy class availability until mid-February, with remaining business class tickets priced between $4,000 and $5,800.

TechAir’s Competitive Pricing Strategy

TechAir plans to offer competitive prices aimed at alleviating the financial strain experienced by Israeli travelers. Initial pre-launch prices for economy flights are listed between $900 and $1,550, although prospective flyers are cautioned that prices may increase over time.

Operational Model and Flight Details

TechAir will operate as a virtual airline, utilizing a wet lease model with established third-party airlines. This means TechAir will manage marketing and customer relations but will not hold its own Air Operator Certificate (AOC).

  • Flight Schedule: Flights are expected to depart Israel around midnight, landing in New York early in the morning.
  • Seasonal Operations: Initially, TechAir plans to run up to 36 flights between January and March 2025.

A Call for Interest and Future Prospects

The TechAir team has launched a website where interested travelers can register and pre-book flights. The airline’s launch is contingent on reaching a specific threshold of bookings. While initial reports suggested collaboration with Portuguese ACMI carrier EuroAtlantic, TechAir’s website states that flights will be operated by an Israeli airline using Airbus A330-900neo aircraft, despite none currently in the Israeli fleet.
