Spirit Airlines Launches 20+ New Routes, Drops 5 Destinations
Spirit Airlines is expanding its network by introducing over 20 new and returning routes while discontinuing five underperforming destinations. The new routes, starting in May, enhance connectivity between major cities and leisure spots, including flights from Raleigh/Durham to Baltimore, Detroit, and New Orleans, and from Indianapolis to Los Angeles and Dallas. The airline has also cut routes to Aguadilla, Ponce, Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos, and Manchester, NH, focusing on optimizing performance in higher-demand markets. This strategic realignment aims to meet evolving passenger demand and improve operational efficiency. Further adjustments to Spirit’s network are anticipated.
Southwest Sells 36 Boeing 737s; United Acquires 18 Embraer E175s
Southwest Airlines has entered a sale-leaseback agreement for 36 Boeing 737-800s with Babcock & Brown Aircraft Management, leasing them back for 26 to 37 months to support fleet modernization and shareholder value. The deal is part of Southwest’s “Even Better” plan. Meanwhile, United Airlines is acquiring 18 Embraer E175s through a sale-leaseback arrangement with Mesa Airlines, with the first eight aircraft already sold and the remaining expected to close by February 1, 2025. These transactions reflect a trend in the aviation industry towards enhancing liquidity and optimizing fleets through strategic financial agreements.
