Alaska Airlines IT Glitch Increases Seattle–London Business Class Costs by $700

SEATTLE- Alaska Airlines (AS) has made a leap into long-haul international flights from Seattle (SEA), including services to London Heathrow (LHR) using Boeing 787-9 jets acquired in the Hawaiian Airlines purchase.

Yet, a glitch in its loyalty booking system is unexpectedly adding fuel surcharges to specific award tickets.

When travelers book a long-haul Alaska Airlines award ticket along with a British Airways (BA) short-haul connection in Europe, the system mistakenly attaches BA-style surcharges, causing an additional charge of nearly $700 for business class redemptions.

Alaska Airlines Adds Unexpected Charges to London Awards

Alaska Airlines has transformed from a regional carrier to an expanding global airline. Following its mergers with Virgin America and Hawaiian Airlines, it now operates widebody aircraft and services international routes.

A noteworthy development is its nonstop flight between Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and London Heathrow Airport.

Reports indicate that Alaska’s internal award pricing system struggles to identify its own London flights when a European connecting flight is included.

If a traveler begins their journey on a British Airways flight within Europe and then transitions to Alaska’s Seattle flight at London Heathrow, the system incorrectly categorizes the long-haul segment as a British Airways-operated route, applying BA’s fuel surcharges.

Heathrow Services and Strategic Operations

Alaska Airlines will begin its service to London Heathrow Terminal 3 on May 21, utilizing the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner obtained through the merger with Hawaiian Airlines. This aircraft is outfitted with 34 business class seats and 266 in economy.

These flights represent Alaska’s inaugural direct service to the UK under its brand.

Initially, Alaska did not secure its own slots at Heathrow during the Summer 2026 coordination but later procured 14 weekly slots from American Airlines, equivalent to a daily round-trip.

This arrangement allows Alaska to maintain a daily presence at Heathrow as it builds its international footprint.

Understanding the Fuel Surcharge Issue

The unexpected surcharge seems to stem from a technical glitch rather than a deliberate pricing strategy. These fees do not apply when:

  • The itinerary starts in the United States
  • The traveler begins their journey in London Heathrow (LHR)
  • The itinerary does not feature British Airways as the first segment

The surcharge appears primarily when a British Airways-operated flight precedes the Alaska segment, leading to an erroneous classification of the itinerary under British Airways pricing rules.

System Limitations in Award Bookings

Alaska Airlines has historically faced challenges with its award booking system, particularly regarding multi-airline itineraries. Although some progress has been made, the pricing logic struggles to adapt to long-haul flights originating from Europe.

As Alaska expands its international services, enhancing the technology behind its booking system will be crucial to meet customer expectations.

Transforming Seattle into a Long-Haul Hub

Alaska Airlines is positioning Seattle as its central long-haul hub, planning to base up to 17 Boeing 787 Dreamliners there. Future destinations mentioned include:

  • Tokyo Narita (NRT)
  • Seoul Incheon (ICN)
  • Rome (FCO)
  • Reykjavik (KEF) with Boeing 737 MAX

The airline aims to connect with at least 12 long-haul international locations from Seattle by 2030.
