Ethiopian Airlines Expands African Network with Two ATR 72-600 Leases to Air Congo

Ethiopian Airlines has signed a lease agreement for two new ATR 72-600 aircraft with Air Congo, where it holds a 49% stake. This collaboration with the Franco-Italian turboprop manufacturer ATR was announced during the Dubai Airshow 2025.

ATR highlighted that this agreement marks a significant step in its efforts to expand within the African market. Ethiopian Airlines aims to utilize these aircraft to enhance regional connectivity across Congo, leveraging advanced, fuel-efficient technology.

The leasing arrangement builds on a strategic partnership established at the Farnborough International Airshow in July 2024, where both parties agreed to improve ATR maintenance capabilities in Ethiopia. This initiative will position Ethiopian Airlines as a regional Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) hub for ATR aircraft, catering to operators throughout the continent.

Mesfin Tasew, the CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group, expressed that the introduction of the new ATRs, coupled with the MRO capabilities, enables Ethiopian Airlines to provide a comprehensive ATR solution. This effort will facilitate better options for airlines in Africa, improving regional connections.

Air Congo’s CEO, Mesfin Biru Weldegeorgis, mentioned that the new ATR 72-600s are equipped with PW127XT engines and are the first of their kind in the country. These aircraft will enhance service to remote airports within the region.

The aircraft are set to start their operations in February 2026.
