Norwegian Adds 30 Boeing 737 MAX-8s, Exercising Previous 2022 Option
Norwegian has made a significant move by placing an order for 30 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. This decision is a continuation of a prior arrangement made with the American manufacturer in 2022, which originally included an order for 50 of these jets.
As of September 26, 2025, this latest order will increase Norwegian’s total to 80 737-8 aircraft, with the final deliveries expected to occur in 2031. Boeing and Norwegian previously announced that the initial 50 aircraft would arrive between 2025 and 2028, but an agreement has been reached to modify the timelines for some of these deliveries.
Norwegian emphasized that this order extension highlights the airline’s anticipated growth in the coming years. Currently, the airline operates six 737-8 jets after signing a lease agreement with Air Lease Corporation earlier in 2023.
The airline’s spokesperson stated, “The updated delivery schedule ensures an efficient and balanced renewal of Norwegian’s fleet, closely aligned with lease expiries and market developments.” Furthermore, this order is expected to enhance passenger experience with quieter cabins and lower emissions.
Geir Karlsen, CEO of Norwegian, expressed enthusiasm regarding the new aircraft. He noted, “This milestone aircraft order is on attractive terms and secures our fleet growth in a way that supports our planned growth and sustainability targets.” He also highlighted the flexibility provided by the adjusted delivery schedule, reinforcing their dedication to operating one of the most modern and fuel-efficient fleets in Europe.
Norwegian holds the distinction of being the first European airline to receive the 737 MAX in 2017 and was also the first to use the 737-8 model for transatlantic flights between Europe and the U.S.
Brad McMullen, Boeing Senior Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing, remarked on Norwegian’s impressive performance over recent years. He stated, “Today’s agreement for an additional 30 737-8s will support their ambition to be the airline of choice in Scandinavia, providing flexibility to expand across Europe and beyond.”
He further appreciated the enduring partnership: “Norwegian has placed over 200 orders for the 737 NG and MAX since 2007. We are honored that Norwegian continues to place its trust in our 737 team to grow its business.”
As of now, Norwegian’s fleet comprises 95 aircraft, including 33 Boeing 737 MAX 8s and 62 Boeing 737-800s.
