IndiGo Airlines Expands Connectivity from Bengaluru: New Routes and Future Plans

BENGALURU – IndiGo Airlines (6E), India’s leading low-cost carrier, has taken a significant step forward in strengthening its presence at Kempegowda International Airport (BLR) in Bengaluru. With the introduction of new routes, the airline enhances its operational footprint in its second-largest hub in India, next to Delhi (DEL). This expansion not only broadens IndiGo’s network but also marks a milestone in connectivity for travelers from Bengaluru.

With the latest route additions, IndiGo now boasts an extensive network connecting Bengaluru (BLR) to various domestic and international destinations. This development emphasizes the airline’s commitment to improving travel options and accessibility for its passengers.

IndiGo’s New Flights from Bengaluru

On December 31, 2024, IndiGo celebrated a record expansion of its network from Bengaluru by launching two new routes.

  • Direct Flights to Ayodhya (AYJ): The introduction of flights to Ayodhya marks the first-ever direct connection from Kempegowda International Airport. IndiGo now connects Ayodhya with five major Indian cities, including Delhi (DEL), Mumbai (BOM), and Hyderabad (HYD).

  • Resumption of Flights to Gorakhpur (GOP): After nearly five years of suspension due to the pandemic, IndiGo has reinstated its Bengaluru to Gorakhpur route to meet the rising demand for travel to this city.

These additions have increased IndiGo’s network reach from 78 to 80 destinations from Kempegowda International Airport, comprising 67 domestic and 13 international routes.

Continued Expansion Plans

IndiGo’s growth trajectory from Bengaluru is set to continue in the upcoming months. The airline plans to:

  • Increase Flights to Surat (STV): A second daily flight to Surat will be added starting December 31, 2024.

  • Enhance Services to Goa (GOX): A third daily flight to Goa will launch on January 15, 2025, complementing existing flights to Dabolim Airport (GOI).

According to exclusive sources from AviationA2Z, IndiGo is expected to operate up to 420 daily flights from Bengaluru in January, with further increases anticipated in February.

A Strategic Hub in South India

Kempegowda International Airport (BLR) serves as a vital gateway to South India and a strategic hub for IndiGo’s operations. The airline’s growing network reflects Bengaluru’s significance as a center for business and tourism. Unique international destinations such as Bali (DPS), Mauritius (MRU), and Langkawi (LGK) enhance its appeal, particularly for transfer passengers from across India.

In 2024, Bengaluru Airport achieved a remarkable milestone by handling over 40 million passengers, marking its entry into the elite 40 million+ airport category. Representatives from Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) project passenger numbers will exceed 42 million in FY25.

IndiGo’s Journey in 2024

Historically, IndiGo had a limited presence in international markets from Bengaluru, ranking sixth among its operational airports. However, this has dramatically changed. The airline has expanded its international destinations from six to thirteen by December 2024, showcasing a remarkable 150% growth in daily flights.

Currently, IndiGo connects Bengaluru with multiple international cities, including:

  • Gulf Cities: Dubai (DXB), Abu Dhabi (AUH), Doha (DOH), and Jeddah (JED)
  • South Asian Cities: Colombo (CMB) and Male (MLE)
  • Southeast Asian Cities: Bangkok (BKK), Phuket (HKT), Langkawi (LGK), Kuala Lumpur (KUL), Singapore (SIN), and Denpasar-Bali (DPS)

This expansion elevates Bengaluru to the third-largest base for IndiGo’s international flights, a significant leap from its previous position.

Future Destinations and Routes

IndiGo’s commitment to expanding its network is expected to enhance travel connectivity significantly. With 80 destinations already, the airline aims to continue its growth trajectory. Potential new international routes under consideration include Bengaluru (BLR) to Nairobi (NBO) and Surat Thani (URT) in Thailand, along with prospective flights to Seychelles (SEZ).
